Twilight Movie Expectations

Posted by Faith in movie.

With the movie release date so close it seems everyone has their own expectations for the film firmly in place. Fans of the book have very particular expectations for the way sets should look, who should be saying what when, etc.

While Melissa Rosenberg (wrote the script) has said that the movie is an adaptation of the book and the movie does follow the plot set up by the book, I think it’s important to think of the film as more a retelling of the story of Twilight than of an adaptation of the book. Similar to how Cinderella has been retold hundreds of different ways, Catherine Hardwicke and teams take on it is going to be a little different than Stephenie Meyer’s.

This is something that people who have been watching for all the new movie stills and scenes that wind up online have probably already thought about. I have to say, when I saw the stills of Edward and Bella in the restaurant it just about killed me!

I mean, look! Just about everything is wrong-at least, when my expectations are that this scene should look the way it was described in the book. Stephenie Meyer had written a lot of details about people and places in her books-these details are marked down on fan sites and gone over on forums and they’re exactly the thing that will have you sitting in the theatre ready to shout out THAT’S NOT HOW IT HAPPENED! in the middle of the very famous and loved meadow scene.

In the interest of giving the Twilight movie a chance on it’s own, I ask you to take a moment before the movie starts rolling to clear your head and remind yourself this is a retelling of the story of Twilight, the story of Edward and Bella in a town called Forks, not my favorite book come to life.

Hopefully, most of us will be able to appreciate the Twilight movie on it’s own, whether we’ve read the book or not.

Original Twilight Script

Posted by Faith in movie.

I hadn’t previously read a lot about the original Twilight script beyond the fact that it didn’t cut it-but I was just poking through Twilight news (as I often do) and started reading some LA Times pieces on Twilight when I came across this interview with Catherine Hardwicke where they asked her about the original Twilight script (NOT from Melissa Rosenberg, the woman who wrote the script for the movie coming out November 21st :) )…and Catherine’s response to what’s different between the two scripts had me cracking up laughing-it’s a very very different story. This is what Catherine said:

The very first thing in the script said that Bella was a track star. She’s obviously not a track star so the first moment you’re like whoa. And then she’s sitting in a diner with James and the bad vampires in the first couple pages. Wow, that doesn’t make sense. And there’s this whole FBI organization that’s tracking these bad vampires, the nomadic vampires, as they go down from Canada to Mexico. I mean, it’s pretty way out. And by the end the FBI is chasing them around on jet skis out in the ocean.

It kind of turned into ‘Charlie’s Angels.’ It was cool enough that when I read it I became curious. I went out and read the book and was like, ‘Whoa boy. Throw the script away and let’s start over.’ Out of fairness to the original writer, he’s a great writer, the book wasn’t out at the time the MTV and Paramount people were developing it. The idea of ‘Twilight’ was only a jumping off point and they did their own thing after that.

Could you imagine if a movie like that came out with fans of the book going to see it? Fans would have been furious, ha! Anyhow…I found it interesting to think of how many different ways the movie could have gone.

Listen to Bella’s Lullaby

Posted by Faith in movie.

I realized I had posted previously about Bella’s Lullaby, but never posted the song exactly. For those who haven’t yet heard Carter Burwell’s “Bella’s Lullaby” for the Twilight movie (I imagine most people have by now, right?) You can listen to the song by playing the youtube video below. Feel free to share opinions in the comments :)

Obama Reading Twilight

Posted by Faith in fandom.

During Obama’s campaign I remember him mentioning that he reads books with his ten year old daughter and that they were going through the Harry Potter series. I remember people saying it might not be smart to mention he reads Harry Potter because of the (religious) controversy around the books. So what’s he reading now? Twilight! *claps* I think this is so fun! I love that we’ll have a relateable President who reads Harry Potter and Twilight with his daughters. MTV Movies Blog posted about this and asked if you think he’d be Team Edward or Team Jacob. I’m geeky enough that I think it would be fun to know.

At the bottom of the MTV blog post they ask about whether this means Twilight screenings at the white house and things like that…my husband suggests Obama appearance in the movie for New Moon. Haha, I’m so amused :)

Bella’s Lullaby -for the Twilight Movie

Posted by Faith in movie.

I just read this great story from the man who composed Bella’s lullaby. In it, he talks about reworking the song numerous times. It’s funny-he was upset about his experience with the Summit production company because they kept making him rework the song-AND a lot of this was because the composer is using pieces of the song throughout the whole film, and thus he thinks of the song more as a “love theme” where as Summit was insisting, NO, this is Bella’s Lullaby. Normally I’m very much a “fuck the man!” kind of person-I take the artist’s side over production companies, etc. In this case, I read this and giggle a little bit, pleased with Summit.

Apparently, in the original script there wasn’t a Bella’s lullaby. This is a huge thing in Twilight, and it gets carried on to the other books! It’s an important part of the story, really. So, because Summit figured out that this was going to be important to fans, Summit made it happen. THIS FILLS ME WITH THE HAPPY. I love hearing that there are people in charge out there trying to make sure that the parts of the book that are important to fans are being honored. I think this is AWESOME.

I understand that the composer wanted to use the song he wanted to use, but I didn’t get the impression from reading his story that he’s read the book-so I don’t think he gets it. On the other hand, I still think he’s a good guy! And I think he was still a good guy for this job, mainly because of his own little love story. From the article:

“‘Bella’s Lullaby, as it appears in this film, was not written to be a lullaby but rather to speak of love - ecstatic, tormented love…

I was in love with an amazing and challenging woman named Christine Sciulli. She left me, I was heartbroken, and I wrote a piece of music that tried to express the thrill and pain of having my heart pierced. She wouldn’t speak to me, so I sent her the music to speak in my place…..

…I should mention that Christine, the woman for whom I first wrote the melody years ago, is now my amazing and challenging wife. In my heart the tune will always be ours, but now it’s yours (and Bella and Edward’s) as well.”

Isn’t that lovely? I think that’s just lovely! :)

I haven’t heard Bella’s Lullaby yet (sadly)-but now I know that even if I don’t like it personally, I still approve…because there was REAL effort made here, and that makes me happy. :)

twilight sequel

Posted by Faith in movie.

So toxicshock.tv claims that Summit Entertainment has announced that it’s going ahead with the Twilight sequel, New Moon.  The article has no quotes from Summit, and I see nothing anywhere else on the net (including the Twilight Lexicon, MTV Movies Blog, Stephenie Meyer’s website, etc)…so I think I call bull shit. I wanted to point it out, anyhow, in case anyone wants to weigh in on that one.

Twilight…Ice Cream? No, really!

Posted by Faith in fandom.

The world has gone Twilight crazy! I totally get it, world. I love Twilight, too.

I was lazily looking around the Internet tonight/this morning (it’s past midnight) and I saw something to make even the most devoted Twilighter tilt their head and go “really? lol wtf?”

Twilight Ice Cream

from Twilight Coven Philippines:

“Dazzled at First Sight” is a combination of Caramel Apple Crumble and Coffee and is inspired by the first time Bella meets Edward. The sweet temptation of the apple crumble and the rich flavor of coffee make for potent combination that will leave you wanting for more.

“A Kiss in the Meadow” features two contrasting flavors which when combined, produces a most intriguing sensation. The refreshing, slightly tart flavor of Summer Berries is combined with the sweet and creamy Belgian Chocolate.

“Clair de Lune”, which represents a significant song in the book and the movie, is a combination of two flavors with very interesting textures. Choc Choc Chip, a chunky chocolate flavor is paired off with the unique, tangy flavor of Mango & Passion fruit.

How unique, ha. And, yes, you read that right, you’d get a free movie pass after buying two qualifying products. (Note that it’s only available in the Philippines.) How strange it would be to be Stephenie Meyer and go grocery shopping and see this. I wonder what she would say.

More Twilight Videos

Posted by Faith in movie.

With all of the new promo videos online popping up it almost seems like we could watch the whole movie before it ever airs. I thought it was really fun watching the new MSN video of the cafeteria scene (yes, with the apple! So cute!) :)

I also read this on CinemaBlend today:

We were told today that ABC Family will be airing two exclusive first looks at Twilight during tomorrow night’s season finale of Greek. Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson will be introducing the clips. The season finale of Greek airs Tuesday night (October 28) at 9:00 PM ETon ABC Family.

Of course I love all the footage, but, it just makes me ansy for the movie. Movie now please?
